Questa nuova Canon 7D è una macchina che segnerà il futuro. Per prima cosa perché non rappresenta un upgrade di una Canon DSLR già esistente ma è un prodotto che si colloca su un nuovo segmento per impensierire direttamente la rivale Nikon D300.
Almeno sulla carta si presenta come un prodotto eccezionale ed innovativo, anello mancante di congiunzione tra il segmento medio e quello professionale.

Sensore CMOS da 18 MP APS-C
Nuovo sensore con tecnologia gapless con la risoluzione più alta sul mercato (in riferimento alla sua dimensione fisica APS-C).
Questo il vero dilemma. Già la 50D con i suoi 15MP mostrava qualche cedimento, con 18MP come sarà!?! Se si comporta bene è una risoluzione che non pone limiti alla fantasia. Dai test fin qui visti il comportamento è eccezionale anche grazie al nuovo processore DIGIC 4.
Sensibilità ISO
Sensibilità fino a 6.400ISO espandibile ulteriormente a 12.800ISO. Usabilissimi gli alti ISO, anche a 3200 ISO l'immagine può tranquillamente essere usata.
Raffica da 8 fps (fotogrammi per secondo)
Ascoltate bene: raffica da 8fps per RAW da 14bit a 18MP!!! A me sembra tantissimo!!! E' questa una macchina che farà gola a molti fotografi sportivi.
Nuovo sistema di esposizione iFCL (Intelligent Focus Colour Luminance)
Nuovo anche il sensore per l'esposizione: sensore a doppio strato a 63 zone. Gli esposimetri tradizionali misurano soltanto le componenti verde e rossa della luce, questo nuovo esposimetro misura anche la componente blu. Questo consente una migliore messa a fuoco ed esposizione in condizioni critiche (ad es. con luci di diversa intensità).
Copertura mirino 100%
Copertura del mirino 100%: come nelle full-frame!
Altra grande innovazione: nel mirino è presente una livella elettronica orizzontale sui 2 assi per orizzonti perfettamente allineati ed infine è possibile far visualizzare un utile reticolo per inquadrature e composizioni perfette.
Nuovo AF da 19 punti
Completamente nuovo il sistema di messa a fuoco AF.
Tutti i punti sono di tipo a croce, con il punto centrale sensibile sia ad f/2.8 che ad f/5.6. Il punto centrale è di tipo a X
Inoltre viene proposta una nuova e innovativa modalità di selezione dei punti di messa a fuoco in base a delle zone (zona AF).
Con questo sistema i 19 punti di messa a fuoco vengono divisi in 5 zone (quella centrale usa ben 9 punti, le altre 4). Altra interessante modalità è la AF ad espansione, ovvero si sceglie manualmente un punto di messa a fuoco tra i 19 disponibili ed il sistema attiva in automatico anche quelli vicini. Infine, grazie ad un oscilloscopio interno, si possono memorizzare li preset per i punti AF in base alla posizione della macchina. Ad es. se la si ruota in verticale la si può impostare che in automatico viene selezionato il gruppo di punti AF in alto (ottima soluzione quando si mette la macchina in verticale per i ritratti).
Dual processor DIGIC 4
Ben due processori "DIGIC 4" per dare velocità alla macchina, gestire al meglio il rumore e la registrazione video Full HD.
Canon afferma che con il nuovo DIGIC IV si possono avere immagini a 6400 ISO aventi lo stesso rumore di immagini scattate a 1600 ISO con il precedente processore DIGIC III. Notevole vero!?!
Trasmettitore Speedlite integrato
Altra grande caratteristica. La EOS 7D finalmente include la possibilità (come le Nikon!) di controllare un flash esterno (sempre mediante infrarossi) senza ST-E2 o 580EX II e incorpora un flash grandangolare capace di coprire un angolo di campo fino a 15 mm.
Registrazione video
La registrazione di filmati è al top. La qualità della registrazione è FULL HD, il che vuol dire filmati alla risoluzione di 1920x1080 pixel. Il frame rate è selezionabile tra 24, 25 e 30 frame al secondo. Ovviamente è disponibile anche la modalità HD 720p, a risoluzione quindi 1280x720 pixel con i valori aggiuntivi di frame rate di 50 e 60 fps.
LE MIE CONCLUSIONI...
Innanzitutto nel complesso è un ottimo compromesso tra la fascia puramente professionale e quella semi-professionale (segmento medio). Diciamo che era il prodotto che in Canon mancava!
Il mirino elettronico con copertura del 100% è sicuramente una caratteristica che fa gola e che finalmente arriva su una DSLR che non costa un occhio.
Altra caratteristica che finalmente si affaccia su una Canon è il trasmettitore Speedlite integrato.
Poi ci sono i nuovi sensori di messa a fuoco ed esposizione che sono stati notevolmente migliorati in precisione e funzionalità. E per finire la raffica di 8 fotogrammi al secondo.
Non c'è che dire, è una macchina che la concorrenza dovrà cercare di eguagliare!
Leggete l'articolo "Canon EOS 7D vs. 50D Resolution Comparison", potrete notare come i MP in più che ci sono sulla 7D si fanno sentire.
Direi che non è poco vero!
Certo bisognerà aspettare ancora i test ufficiali!?! E i test ufficiali sono arrivati. Sono arrivati i test dell'autorevole DPREVIEW (vedi nell'apposita sezione di questo articolo) e la Canon 7D ne esce promossa a pieni voti. C'è chi dice che 18MP sono troppi per un sensore così piccolo? Dai test risulta che rispetto alla D300 ci sia più dettaglio. Parlando di numeri infatti si vede che

1) Sul sito www.naturfokus.info potete leggere l'articolo Canon 7D Field Review. Riporto le conclusioni:
"Canon 7D combine very good image quality with a fast and accurate AF-system. I think this will be a popular camera for shooting action. The camera is in many ways closer to the 1D Mark III camera, rather than the 5D Mark II, and a good step over the Canon 50D. I think many photo enthusiasts and pros will acquire the 7D camera. In my case, this will be the first 1.6 crop factor camera, I will bring in my photo bag on assignments and expeditions.
The picture quality from the 7D pleased and surprised me, and both amateurs and pros can now get a decent action-camera for a reasonable price. I have no doubts about replacing the 1D Mark III with 7D (with battery grip), at least if it is as weather-resistant and sturdy as announced."

PRO
- Image quality is very good. Images are full of detail.
- The viewfinder. It’s big and bright.
- 8fps is never a bad thing to have.
- Flash master finally built in.
- 19 AF Points. This to me is the perfect amount. Having 40+ selectable AF points is crazy!
- 30p and 24p at 1080p
- Video quality is amazing, wish I knew what I was doing with it.
- The Liveview and VF leveling tool is a nice touch.
- Compact Flash. No SD slot is fine by me, I never want CF to die.
- Lots of button mapping options, more than any other EOS.
- Menu System. They are easy to navigate. I especially like Custom Function IV Menu 1. The graphical display of what button you’re mapping is great.
- The toggle switch for movies and stills is the best yet for EOS.
- "Q" Button, accessing & navigating the Quick Control screen is a breeze.
- No "Scene Modes". I like that folks will have to be forced to learn a little bit about photography. Auto & Creative still there, but we’re progressing!
- The on/off switch is idiot proof now.
CONTRO
- In high speed drive mode (8fps), you may not actually get 8fps in certain situations. See page 93 of the manual (Canada/USA). Drive speed is also affected in full M mode. According to Canon, this is because of the new metering system in the camera. It’s far more accurate at the expense of some FPS.
- AWB still stinks. I don’t think that will ever change.
- Liveview AF still hasn’t improved in speed.
- 18mp – Not because of noise and all that (and it definitely contributes to noise). I’m just happy with the 10mp filesize. An optimized 10-12mp sensor would have been grand. I hate to beat a dead horse.
- ISO performance hasn’t improved enough over the 50D to be a reason to upgrade. I didn’t notice any difference in prints.
- Chipped battery. I don’t like paying more for batteries that give no real advantage in performance.
- No ergonomic improvement to the battery grip, how about another joystick?
- No affordable GPS addon yet.

5) Test fatto sul nuovo sistema autofocus della 7D. L'articolo lo potete leggere qui, è stato fatto dal sito www.traumflieger.de (lo dovete leggere in tedesco!!!). Mastico poco il tedesco ma sembrerebbe che i risultati sono da prima della classe.

Riassumo ora i CONTRO:
- Switching to Live View mode is slow
- No dedicated AF-assist lamp (flash is used), and AF-assist adjustment is buried in the Flash Settings menu
- AF not as good in low light as 50D
- AE not reliable in very low light
- No intervalometer or multiple exposure support
- No in-camera image stabilization (lens based)
- Auto ISO not configurable
- No in-camera lateral chromatic aberration correction
- Flash weaker than 50D; increasing flash EV compensation above 1.0 EV resulted in dimmer image
- Live View shutter lag is a little longer than with the optical viewfinder
- No continuous autofocus in Movie mode
- Auto white balance leaves tungsten lighting too warm
- Default high ISO noise suppression has trouble with low-contrast areas, especially in the red channel
- Pop-up flash servo is loud

FIRMWARE
Uscito il firmware 1.2.5 (18/04/2011) che offre i seguenti miglioramenti:
1. Fixed a rare phenomenon in which there were rare cases where movie files taken could not be opened when repeatedly shooting movies with specific CF cards.
2. Fixed a rare phenomenon in which there were cases where "Err 02" appeared when repeatedly shooting still images with specific CF cards.
3. Fixed a phenomenon that occurred when using high-capacity (32 GB or greater) CF cards: If either a CF card with only a little available space remaining or the battery was removed and then reinserted into the camera, and then the user attempted to start shooting movies immediately, shooting would stop.
4. Improved the writing/reading speeds when using UDMA 7-compatible CF cards.
5. Fixed a phenomenon that occurred when custom function C.Fn 4-1 was set to assign IS start to the AF stop button on the lens: When used with lenses that do not have an AF stop button, the IS function would not work.
6. Corrected some mistakes in the menu screens displayed in Arabic and Portuguese. (This applies to models in overseas markets. The models for the Japanese market do not display those languages.)
Uscito il firmware 1.2.3 (21/07/2010) che offre i seguenti miglioramenti:
1. Fixes a phenomenon in which the set aperture moves when shooting movies
in manual exposure mode using some lenses (such as macro lenses).
2. Fixes the AF point-selection behavior of the C.Fn III-7 (Manual AF pt.
selec. pattern) custom function when set to [1].
3. Fixes the AF point display for the viewfinder electronic level when
shooting in the vertical position.
4. Corrects misspellings in the Spanish and Thai menus for applicable products.
Uscito il firmware 1.1.0 che offre i seguenti miglioramenti:
1. Corrects a phenomenon that in images captured by continuous shooting, and under certain conditions, barely noticeable traces of the immediately preceding frame may be visible.
Uscito il firmware 1.0.9 che offre i seguenti miglioramenti:
1. Improves AF accuracy during Live View shooting.
2. Corrects a phenomenon where in rare instances, movie images shot by the camera may exhibit abnormal colors.
3. Corrects a phenomenon that at certain timings, the shutter cannot be released when the camera's built-in flash or an external Speedlite is used for shooting.
